Exeter, NH—August 5, 2014—On Thursday, August 7, The American Independence Museum (AIM) will celebrate Purple Heart Day to commemorate the same date in 1782 as well as an original Purple Heart in its own collection. On August 7, 1782, General George Washington issued an order that allowed soldiers who performed “meritorious action” to sew a purple heart of cloth or silk onto their uniforms.
Admission for the day will be free for all active duty military personnel as well as for veterans and their immediate families. The Museum’s ongoing effort to make its exhibits accessible to all persons connected with the military results from a $5,000 gift in April from an anonymous donor.
Founded in 1991 in historic downtown Exeter, the private, not-for-profit American Independence Museum includes the 18th century Ladd-Gilman House and Folsom Tavern. In addition to featuring a variety of living history exhibits, its collection includes one of only 26 surviving copies of the Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence, two rare drafts of the U.S. Constitution, and an original Purple Heart awarded by General George Washington to soldiers for extraordinary bravery.
